Description

ALGISITE M is a nonwoven dressing made from calcium alginate fibers. Its thick, highly absorbent structure helps manage moderate to heavy amounts of exudate and can be used in both superficial wounds and deeper cavities or wound tracts.

When the dressing contacts exudate, calcium ions within the fibers exchange with sodium ions in the wound fluid. This process transforms the fibers into a soft, moist gel that conforms to the wound bed.

Indicati+ons

ALGISITE M is indicated for moderately to heavily exuding partial- or full-thickness wounds, including:

• Pressure ulcers.
• Venous and arterial ulcers, according to professional assessment.
• Ischemic ulcers.
• Diabetic foot ulcers.
• Postoperative wounds.
• Open surgical wounds.
• Dehisced wounds.
• Traumatic wounds.
• Cavity wounds.
• Sinus or tunneling wounds when using the appropriate presentation.
• Infected wounds under medical supervision and together with the prescribed treatment.

Effect and technology

• Can absorb approximately ten times its own weight.
• Forms a soft gel upon contact with wound exudate.
• Helps maintain a moist environment favorable to wound healing.
• Conforms to irregularities within the wound bed.
• Helps manage excess moisture and reduce the risk of maceration.
• Calcium within the fibers may support local hemostasis.
• Produces minimal fiber shedding.
• Can be molded, folded, or cut to fit the wound.
• Supports careful removal after the dressing has gelled.
• May be used in deeper wounds with the appropriate packing technique.
• Requires a secondary dressing to secure it and manage exudate.

It should not be used on dry or minimally exuding wounds. Dressing-change frequency depends on exudate level and the clinical condition of the wound.
